A fragrance development brief is not a list of ingredients — it is an emotional and brand brief. This guide shows you how to brief a fragrance development project effectively, whether you are working with Equal Strategy, Scent Swirl or any fragrance development partner.
What a Fragrance Brief Actually Contains
The most common mistake in fragrance development briefing is describing a desired scent rather than a desired outcome. ‘I want something that smells like fresh linen and sandalwood’ is a fragrance description, not a brief. A proper brief describes: (1) the emotional response the fragrance should create in the target audience at the moment of first exposure; (2) the brand values and personality the fragrance should communicate; (3) the space type and ambient conditions of deployment; (4) the target audience demographic, cultural background and sensory expectations; (5) the competitive positioning — what the fragrance should feel like relative to comparable brands the audience knows.
Brief Template
| Element | Your Answer | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Emotional brief | What should visitors FEEL in the first 10 seconds? | Calm, energised, aspirational, trusted, premium, grounded |
| Brand personality | Three adjectives that describe your brand | Not fragrance adjectives — brand adjectives |
| Space type | What is the physical environment? | Gym floor, hotel lobby, dental waiting room, boutique retail |
| Audience | Who walks in? | Demographics, cultural background, expectation level |
| Cultural context | Any cultural fragrance sensitivities? | Halal-certified needed? Oud appropriate? Heavy florals avoid? |
| Competitive brief | What should it NOT smell like? | Competitive exclusion is as important as positive direction |
| Intensity preference | Strong/perceptible or background/subtle? | Most commercial spaces: background, not perceptible to acclimatised staff |
What Happens After the Brief
Equal Strategy, part of Sensory Experiences Group, handles all signature fragrance development for Scent Swirl clients who want bespoke fragrance. After brief submission, DROM develops two to three directional samples aligned to the brief. Samples are shipped to the client for evaluation — ideally in the actual deployment space, not from a blotter. Selected direction is refined into a final formula, assigned exclusively to the client, and deployed via their Scent Swirl subscription.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does fragrance development take after submitting a brief?
The full process from brief to formula lock takes 6–8 weeks, including sample development, client evaluation and formula refinement. Samples are shipped to the client within 2–3 weeks of brief approval.
Can I develop a signature scent for just one outlet, not a full chain?
Yes. Signature scent development is available for single-outlet operators as well as chains. Contact us to discuss whether bespoke development or library fragrance selection is the more appropriate route for your specific business.
